What Is Ceramic Coating? How it bonds and how long it lasts

A liquid that cures into a hard, glass-like layer. It keeps your paint glossy and far easier to wash for years.

What a ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid resin built mostly on silicon dioxide, the compound glass and quartz are made of. Some formulas add other metal oxides, such as titanium dioxide, for extra hardness and gloss.

It is applied by hand, one panel at a time. As the solvent evaporates, the resin reacts with moisture in the air and cross-links into a transparent film. That film is chemically bonded to the clear coat, the top layer of the factory paint, which is why it does not wash off the way a wax does.

The layer is very thin. One coat is around a micron, while the clear coat beneath it usually measures 35 to 55 microns and a human hair about 70. You cannot see or feel the added thickness. What changes is the surface: smoother and harder than bare clear coat, and far less inclined to hold on to water and dirt.

What you notice afterwards

Rain beads up and rolls off instead of drying into spots. Bird droppings, tree sap and road film sit on the coating rather than keying into the paint, so most of them come off with a normal wash. The gloss is deeper too, which shows most on dark and metallic colours.

There is a longer-term reason as well. The clear coat is the layer every polish removes a little of, and it never grows back. A coating takes the daily wear in its place, and when it thins it can be topped up or reapplied.

How Singapore's climate ages car paint

Paint ages fastest where heat, humidity and strong sunlight meet, and Singapore has all three all year round. The Meteorological Service Singapore records an average of 2,113 mm of rain a year over the 1991–2020 period, falling on 171 separate days. A car parked outdoors gets wet almost one day in two, and the sun usually comes back within hours.

Rain is not clean water. It carries dust and pollutants, and when it dries on bare paint it leaves mineral spots that bake in under the sun. With mean relative humidity around 82 percent, water lingers on the surface longer, and so does everything it carries.

Then there is the sun. On the National Environment Agency's scale, the daily maximum UV index in Singapore typically sits between 6 and 9, and it regularly reaches the very high and extreme bands between 11 am and 3 pm. UV slowly breaks down clear coat. It is what turns red paint pink and leaves roofs looking chalky, and the main reason ceramic coating in Singapore has become a standard choice for new cars.

A coating takes this wear in place of the clear coat. Once it has thinned, it can be renewed. A damaged clear coat can only be polished down or repainted.

Ceramic coating and the alternatives

There are three common ways to protect paint, and each one does a different job. A polish and wax gives a quick, inexpensive gloss that needs renewing every few months. A ceramic coating is a long-term chemical layer. A nano graphene coating is a ceramic reinforced with graphene, built to last longer still.

Criterion Polish & wax Ceramic coating Nano graphene coating
What it is Natural or synthetic wax over freshly polished paint Silica-based resin that cures on the clear coat Ceramic resin reinforced with graphene
How it holds Sits on top of the paint Chemical bond Chemical bond
Typical lifespan Up to 6 months 2 to 5 years, depending on product and care 3 to 7 years
Water Good beading while fresh Strong beading and sheeting Faster sheeting, fewer water spots

Graphene coatings are a more recent variant: a ceramic resin reinforced with graphene. Makers present them as more flexible and better at shedding heat, an argument aimed at dark cars parked in the sun.

How a ceramic coating is applied

A careful application takes several hours, and most of that time goes into preparing the paint. The coating will preserve whatever it covers, so every step before it decides the final result.

  1. Wash and decontamination

A pH-neutral wash, then a chemical treatment that dissolves iron fallout, and a clay pass that lifts what is still stuck to the paint.

  2. Machine polishing

Swirl marks and water spots are polished out of the clear coat. The coating will preserve whatever it covers, so this is the step that decides the final finish. More on polishing.

  3. Panel wipe

Polishing oils are removed with a dedicated cleaner, so the coating bonds to bare clear coat and not to a film of residue.

  4. Application, panel by panel

The coating is spread in small sections. Each one is left to flash for a moment, then levelled with a microfibre so no high spots remain.

  5. Final inspection

Every panel is checked under strong light for high spots or missed areas before the car goes back on the road.

How long a ceramic coating lasts

Professional ceramic coatings are usually rated for two to five years. That rating assumes good preparation and sensible care. On a real car, where it lands in the range comes down to a handful of factors.

  • Preparation. The coating bonds only to clean, polished clear coat. Residue left underneath shortens its life from the first day.
  • Number of layers. A second layer adds durability, most usefully on the bonnet, roof and boot lid, which take the most sun.
  • Where the car is parked. A car left in an open-air carpark in Singapore takes far more UV and rain than one under cover.
  • How it is washed. Brush washes and strong detergents wear the layer down faster than anything else.
  • Top-ups. A silica spray applied every few months renews the surface and spares the base layer. It is the core of coat maintenance.
Carnauba wax 1 to 2 months
Synthetic sealant 4 to 6 months
Ceramic coating 2 to 5 years
Nano graphene coating 3 to 7 years
Typical ranges quoted for each type of product. Real lifespan depends on the product, the preparation, exposure and care. On this scale, wax barely registers.

Looking after a coated car

The coating does most of the work. A few habits, mostly in the first week and at every wash, decide how long it keeps performing.

A silica top-up spray and a clean microfibre renew the surface between two coatings.
  1. First 24 hours

    Keep it dry

The coating is still curing. Rain on a fresh coating can leave marks in the surface.

  2. First week

    Water only

Rinse without shampoo. Most coatings take about a week to reach full hardness.

  3. Every wash

    Gentle washing

pH-neutral shampoo, two buckets, a clean microfibre to dry. Automated brush washes are best avoided.

  4. Every few months

    Maintenance top-up

A decontamination wash and a silica top-up spray renew the surface. How coat maintenance works.

Ceramic coating questions

9H is a grade on the pencil hardness test (ASTM D3363). Pencils of increasing hardness are pushed across a coated test panel, and the rating is the hardest lead that does not cut through the film. It describes the film on that panel in laboratory conditions. It is not a measure of how well a car resists scratches on the road, and it is not the Mohs mineral scale.

A new car is the best moment to coat. The paint needs very little polishing, so the coating goes over an almost perfect finish and keeps it that way. New cars still arrive with fallout from transport and storage, which is why decontamination is still part of the preparation.

Rinse with plain water during the first week, then wash normally with a pH-neutral shampoo. Most coatings take about a week to reach full hardness, and a strong detergent before then can dull the finish.

No. The layer is transparent. It deepens the gloss, which is most visible on dark and metallic paints, but the colour itself does not change.

It thins gradually rather than peeling. Water beads less and the car becomes harder to clean. At that point the coating can be topped up, or the car can be prepared and coated again. The clear coat underneath has been protected the whole time.
